About Sri Lanka Day

About Sri Lanka Day

Sri Lanka Day is an annual one-day event showcasing Sri Lanka presented by Sri Lanka Foundation at the world famous 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica, California. Since its inception in 2006 Sri Lanka Day has grown to become the largest event promoting Sri Lanka and its Culture in USA.

It is an event that transports Sri Lankan Americans and visitors to Sri Lanka. The aroma of Sri Lankan food fill the air while the sounds of Sri Lankan music spread through Promenade. The main stage near Wilshire is filled with various Sri Lankan musicians & dances from 10:00 am to 10:00pm. Booths along the Promenade offer the best of Sri lankan food, tea, spices and other goods and services. Visitors can learn about Sri Lanka and taste delicious food.

At 4:00 pm the “Pageant of Lanka” parades through the Promenade with beautifully dressed performers, dancers, drummers and magnificent theater elephants.  Pageant of Lanka mimics the “Esala Perahara” which is an annual procession held in Sri Lanka that dates back to the 3rd Century BC. The day ends with “Baila” music, a fusion of Sri Lankan, Spanish, African and Portuguese rhythms which has long been folk music in Sri Lanka. Around one hundred thousand Sri Lankan Americans and visitors join us every year to celebrate “Sri Lanka Day”

This year Sri Lanka Day will be held on August 23, 2014 so mark your calenders and join us at 10 am.
